Tell us your thoughts about ours >> Web Directions South 2011
Last week we were lucky enough to attend the Web Directions South conference in Darling Harbor, Sydney (what a location!). WDS is a trade show about everything in the web environment, with 4 main sections - Design, Development, W3C and BigPicture. The conference consisted of trade booths, networking events and concurrent workshops and lectures running all day.
We spent majority of the time there manning the SilverStripe feature booth and answering the constant onslaught of questions about the CMS and other services we provide. Adam even whipped up an awesome leader board site and web app (http://hero.silvertwit.com/) for the Guitar Hero competition SilverStripe was running.
However I did get to check some excellent user interface (UI) and content presentations. What did I get out of this? Well, the future is looking very ‘mobile’. Everyone is hungry for innovation with mobile devices and this seems to be becoming the new user interface hurdle. Very exciting stuff!
It was awesome to see so many people passionate about what I am passionate about, the web and everything 'internet'. It was also great to see a number of Brisbane people and company’s down at WDS.
I spent my first night in Sydney developing the leader-board system to run the SilverStripe competition, started at 5pm finished around 1am. Although i should mention there was a big gap in the middle where the SilverStripe team and I took on a 1kg rack of pork at the local ribs place… so in all it took me 4 hours to deliver a little web app which included a mobile version. I have included the source code below.
I did get a chance to poke my head in to a few presentations, what I learnt from that is we have to work a lot harder to keep people engaged in the sites we develop. Particulary site owners need to invest in making their content interesting and fun. Gameification of websites and web applications is a direction we seem to be traveling in fast.
It all ended a little too fast, but luckily we did end with a big after party sponsored by SilverStripe. We carried on it to the night, and morning we may have even missed our flight but that is a whole other story.
It was our first WDS but we will be back next year, bigger and better!
You will need SilverStripe 2.4.5 installed, and if you want the mobile application active you will need to download the mobile module for SilverStripe.
Download and unzip the files into the root of your SilverStripe Installation, this not for production use and comes with no warranty. However if you have any questions at all just get in contact with us.
